Prolific teen offender gets his first taste of custody

A teenager with a long list of previous convictions has avoided jail. Until now.

Judge William Hart told Hayden Scarrott he must have believed he "walked on water" in avoiding custody. But he said the day had arrived when he avoided it no more.

Scarrott, 19, of Ashcombe Road in Weston-super-Mare, pleaded guilty to threatening with a blade in January. He also admitted assaulting a female and two assaults on emergency workers in April.

Judge William Hart handed him 71 weeks' custody. He told Scarrott: "Quite regularly the youth and magistrates courts have never imposed on you a custodial sentence.

"You must have thought you walked on water. You have 23 appearances at court for 60 to 70 offences. Today is the day when I must impose the first prison sentence you have ever received."

Andy Pickett, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court in January Scarrott entered Bargain Booze in Clevedon, pushed by a man and shouted at some girls. Scarott then told the man "What the f*** you looking at?" before pulling a blade from his waistband and poking him in the stomach with it.

Police obtained the shop's CCTV of the incident and the image of the suspect was circulated. Scarrott was identified as a result.

Mr Hetherington said, in April, Scarrott was seen assaulting a female associate who was spotted on the ground near a shop. The court heard police were called and in the process of being arrested Scarrott headbutted PC Zac Ghent and kicked PC Ryan Cox.

Nate Toms, defending, said: "It's obvious the custody threshold is passed. It's obvious a suspended sentence is off the table as well."

Mr Toms said his young client had a troubled background in which he had suffered physical abuse and started drinking aged 11. The court was told Scarrott then "went off the rails" aged 14 having fallen under the influence of older men.

Mr Toms said: "Because he is young there is still the possibility of change. He's abstained from drugs and alcohol remanded in custody."
