Yet another massive Assassin’s Creed is in the works, and this one is seemingly darker than previous entries.
During the Ubisoft Forward showcase on Saturday, the company officially announced an all-new Assassin’s Creed adventure under the codename Hexe. It’s in development at Ubisoft Montreal — the studio behind Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and even Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Clint Hocking, creative director of Far Cry 2 and Watch Dogs: Legion, is leading Hexe.
There’s no mention of the setting, time period, or what Hexe‘s storyline will be. However, series vice president and executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté said it’ll be “A very different type of Assassin’s Creed game.”
The (incredibly brief) teaser shows a dark, eerie forest. There’s a hanging bundle of twigs made into the Assassin’s Creed logo, and then everything cuts to black. Short, but enough to make the internet’s collective imagination run wild.

We work in the dark…

There’s already some speculation that Hexe takes place in the 16th century somewhere in Europe. More specifically, when witch-hunting was common between 1580 and 1630. It’s also worth noting that in German, ‘Hexe’ means witch. Remember that we’re only theorizing here, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
Before Hexe‘s announcement, many fans thought Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a project with live-services elements, was the next annual franchise installment. However, it seems Infinity is more akin to social media platforms.
“Infinity is not a game, per se, is going to be the single entry point for our fans into the Assassin’s Creed franchise into the future,” Marc-Alexis Côté, series vice president and executive producer, explains. “[It’s] going to be a hub that will unite all our different experiences and our players together in meaningful ways.”
Eventually, major franchise releases will connect to Infinity somehow, and Ubisoft is experimenting with multiplayer experiences through the hub. The company is still tight-lipped about specifics.
Alongside Hexe, Ubisoft also revealed Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Project Red.
