Prognosis on Bears RB David Montgomery is ‘good,’ considered ‘day-to-day’ with lower leg injury

The Chicago Bears lost starting running back David Montgomery to an ankle/knee injury during the first quarter of their Week 3 game against the Houston Texans.

Montgomery was rolled up during a play in the first quarter, where he walked off the field under his own power. But he was limping, and he was later escorted to the locker room and ruled doubtful to return.

But it sounds like there’s good news on the Montgomery front.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said the prognosis on Montgomery’s “lower leg” injury is “good.” He’s officially “day-to-day,” which is great news for one of the most important players on offense and considering he’s in a contract year.

Montgomery was replaced by Khalil Herbert, who had himself a day against one of the league’s worst run defenses. Herbert had 157 yards on 20 carries (7.9 average) and two touchdowns.

It’s certainly encouraging knowing the Bears have a starting-caliber backup in Herbert who can step in for Montgomery. But the hope is Montgomery returns sooner rather than later for a Chicago offense that’s only been able to run the ball.
