Products worth buying in the Boxing Day sales - and the dud deals to avoid

Everyone loves a bargain and the Boxing Day sales is where you can usually bag one.

Last year, three in ten products were cheaper on Boxing Day than at the start of December and the shoppers who made their purchase on the day after Christmas saved a fifth on average.

According to data collected by the price comparison service PriceSpy, ten types of products in particular were cheaper to pick up on Boxing Day than on any other day of the year.

Fitness and smart watches gave you the most considerable saving, with the cost on Boxing Day being 37% cheaper with an average price of £263.

Buying headphones and portable speakers also gave a good bargain on Boxing Day being 15% to 21% cheaper to buy alongside stand mixers and other kitchen machinery which saw a 13% reduction in price.

PriceSpy highlighted that lawnmowers, hair trimmers and clippers, laptops, watches, hair straighteners and curlers, and TV’s all dropped in price the day after Christmas.

By purchasing these items in the Boxing Day sales, you could potentially make a saving between seven to 13%.

However, PriceSpy warns shoppers of getting “too excited” with the Boxing Day sales and that they should actually air on the side of caution before purchasing certain items.

This is because even if the item may look like a bargain, it actually could be more expensive than you realise.

In particular, PriceSpy highlighted that electric toothbrushes have actually increased in price by a whopping 38% compared to December last year, whilst pushchairs, prams and strollers have seen the price pushed up by around 19%.

Last December, the average price of a suitcase sat at £115 however the price comparison group has found the average cost has actually increased by 17%.

Golf clubs, which had an average cost of £404 last December, have increased by 11% whilst smartwatches, with an average price of £253 last year, have risen by 10%.

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, UK country manager at PriceSpy said: “It’s all too easy to get caught up in the excitement and nostalgia of the Boxing Day sale. However, sensible shopping behaviour shouldn’t go out of the window.”

If you plan on braving the Boxing Day sales, Liisa advises you to prepare, compare, and hold your nerve.

She added: “Whether shopping online or heading out to the shops, to avoid getting carried away by headline deals: know what you want to buy, write a list and stick to it.

“Even better, set up price alerts to be notified when products on your list fall in price.”

“Before adding a product to your basket, look past the offer being advertised and compare prices across multiple retailers to ensure that you’re buying the item from the best place.

“Stores raise and lower their prices all the time, so advertised deals may not appear as they first seem.”

“Depending on what you’re looking for, Boxing Day might not be the best time to buy.

“Keeping an eye on prices and biding your time might help you find better deals. Just be sure to do your research to ensure it’s a genuine deal.”
