Sam Mercer produced eight M. Night Shyamalan films, including The Sixth Sense.

Sam Mercer, the esteemed producer known for his work on eight M. Night Shyamalan films, including the iconic The Sixth Sense, has passed away at the age of 69. Mercer succumbed to younger-onset Alzheimer’s on Feb. 12 at his residence in South Pasadena, as confirmed by his wife, Tegan Jones.

Mercer's career in the film industry was marked by a series of notable achievements. He commenced his journey as a location manager for various films such as Stripes (1981), National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985). Subsequently, he transitioned to Disney, where he served as a production executive on acclaimed features like Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) and Dead Poets Society (1989).

His collaboration with Shyamalan began with The Sixth Sense in 1999, a groundbreaking success that grossed $673 million worldwide. This partnership led to the production of several other films, including Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), and The Village (2004).

Throughout his career, Mercer's influence extended beyond producing films. He was known for fostering a familial atmosphere on set, emphasizing kindness and grace under pressure. Shyamalan fondly remembers Mercer as a mentor and a guiding force, highlighting his ability to instill a sense of reassurance and optimism in those around him.

Aside from his work with Shyamalan, Mercer's producing credits encompass a diverse range of projects, such as Van Helsing (2004), Jarhead (2005), and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012). His impact on aspiring filmmakers was profound, as evidenced by the heartfelt tribute from Ricky Staub, a former assistant turned collaborator.

Sam Mercer's legacy transcends his professional accomplishments; he was revered for his compassion, humor, and unwavering support for those he worked with. His passing leaves a void in the film industry, but his spirit lives on through the enduring impact he had on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife, Tegan Jones, and his children, Miles and Sierra. Donations in his memory can be made to Lorenzo’s House, a cause close to his heart.
