An investigation is under way into the death of a worker at a coal mine in central Queensland.

The 48-year-old man died at the Byerwen Mine infrastructure site in Suttor, west of Mackay on Saturday morning.

Initial reports suggest the incident involved a pick and a carry crane, industry regulator Resources Safety and Health Queensland said.

A carry crane is a small crane on the back of a vehicle that can easily be moved around a site.

Mining company QCoal said the whole organisation was shocked by the death of the "long-serving, senior and well-loved" member of their team.

"We are focused on the support of the family and the affected staff who are obviously devastated by this tragedy," it said in a statement.

Queensland Police said the man was found unresponsive and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

The industry regulator has sent several officials to the site to probe what happened.

"Our thoughts are with the worker's family, friends and colleagues today," it said in a statement.

"We are committing to a thorough investigation."
