Probe into Glasgow toddler Lauren Wade's death postponed as GP fails to answer calls

A probe into the death of two-year-old Glasgow girl Lauren Wade has been postponed as a GP witness did not respond to telephone calls.

Lauren Wade was left to starve to death by mum Margaret Wade, 41, and Marie Sweeney, 40, in March 2015 at their flat in Sighthill. A judge heard how Lauren went without proper food or care for months and was riddled with thousands of head lice.

A "skinny and dirty" Lauren had a sodden nappy, bald patches and thousands of head lice. A post mortem revealed the toddler had been the victim of “severe neglect”.

Wade and Sweeney were jailed in 2019 for six years and four months each after pleading guilty to neglecting the toddler between June 2014 and March 2015. The Fatal Accident Inquiry at Glasgow Sheriff Court into the death of Lauren entered its fourth day on Thursday.

Procurator fiscal depute Selina Brown was asked by Sheriff Principal Craig Turnbull where she was with witnesses.

She replied: "In terms of the GP, I continued contacting the practice yesterday and, on both occasions, it just rang out."

It was revealed that David Blair, representing the Greater Glasgow Health Board will call another doctor when the inquiry resumes on July 27. The Crown case will also close when they are able to cite their remaining doctor.

An agreed evidence document will also be heard on that date. Sheriff Turnbull asked all parties to have written submissions by August 5.
