During the opening night screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, pro-Palestinian protesters caused a disruption by chanting 'Stop the genocide!' The incident occurred at the screening of the David Gordon Green comedy 'Nutcrackers' at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Four protesters walked down the center aisle carrying signs and flashlights while criticizing festival sponsor Royal Bank of Canada, demanding the bank to 'Cut ties with RBC.'
The festival director, who was speaking on stage at the time, attempted to maintain order and urged the protestors to allow the festival to proceed. However, the disruption led to boos from numerous attendees. The protest lasted for a few minutes before security intervened and escorted the demonstrators out of the venue.
Despite requests for comment, representatives for the festival did not respond. In a statement, RBC expressed respect for individuals' right to voice their opinions but expressed disappointment in activist groups attempting to overshadow the cultural event. The bank emphasized that the focus should be on the work of artists and supporting essential arts and cultural programs.
RBC acknowledged the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza, expressing empathy for all those affected by the situation. This incident is not the first time RBC has faced criticism at TIFF, as a campaign called RBC Off Screen protested the festival sponsor last year. An open letter signed by notable figures such as Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, and Joaquin Phoenix urged TIFF to reconsider its relationship with RBC, citing concerns over the bank's funding of the oil and gas industry.
