Pro-Palestinian activists are making a new demand to Kamala Harris ahead of the Democratic National Convention, urging her to allow their involvement. The DNC, set to begin in Chicago, is expected to be a platform for dissent, with various progressive groups planning demonstrations and vigils. The conflict between Israel and Gaza has sparked intense debates within the Democratic Party.

Despite little change on the ground in Gaza, there is a sense of optimism among activists following Harris' statements showing empathy towards Palestinian civilians. The Uncommitted National Movement, a leading progressive group, has been lobbying for changes in US policy, including an arms embargo on Israel.

However, there is uncertainty over whether the DNC will address their requests, such as providing speaking slots for pro-Palestinian advocates. While some activists have engaged with Harris and her team, there are concerns over the lack of substantial policy changes being proposed.

The Uncommitted National Movement has been successful in engaging with Harris' team and convention organizers, reminiscent of the collaboration between Biden's 2020 campaign and progressive allies of Sen. Bernie Sanders. The Harris campaign is also reaching out to Arab American and Jewish communities in Michigan, recognizing the importance of winning over progressive voters and key voting blocs.

Meetings held with Arab-American elected officials and leaders indicate the campaign's efforts to address concerns about the situation in the Middle East. The engagement with various communities underscores the electoral significance of appealing to progressives, young voters, and Muslim and Arab American voters in battleground states like Michigan.
