Pro-Palestine activists gather for 'emergency demonstration' in Glasgow city centre

PRO-Palestine activists have gathered for an "emergency demonstration" in Glasgow's city centre.

On Wednesday evening, dozens of protesters took part in a march from Central Station to Buchanan Steps.

Activists could be heard saying, "Gaza, Gaza, don't you cry, we will never let you die," and, "from Glasgow, to Gaza, come on the intifada", while carrying a banner which read: "Stop the genocide".

Advertising the demonstration on Instagram, the Gaza Genocide Emergency Committee campaign group said Israel was "resuming the slaughter of civilians in Gaza".

In a statement, the group said: "Zionism means genocide and never-ending war. Israel, with UK support, is resuming the slaughter of civilians in Gaza. The US is bombing Yemen to support Israel, and to terrorise those who responded positively to the International Court of Justice call to take action against the genocide.

But, as in Vietnam, and as in Afghanistan, the Americans face a people fiercely determined to resist imperialist domination. "Until the violent ideology of Zionism is defeated, we will continue to see armed police at Palestine protests, attacks on our civil liberties, fake antisemitism arrests and trials."

It comes one day after Israel launched airstrikes across the Gaza Strip which killed more than 400 Palestinians.

Israel has since launched a "limited ground operation" in northern Gaza to retake part of the Netzarim corridor which bisects northern Gaza from the south and from where it had withdrawn as part of the ceasefire with Hamas that began in January.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz warned Palestinians that the army would again order evacuations from combat zones soon.

Since Tuesday's bombardment, Gaza's health ministry said at least 436 people, including 183 children and 94 women, have been killed, and another 678 people have been injured.

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
