Pro-Israel Super PAC Targets Missouri Democrat Cori Bush

St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell speaks during a press conference, Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at the Buzz Westfall Justice Center in Clayton, Mo. The American Israel Public Affairs Committe

A pro-Israel super PAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), is actively working to unseat Missouri Democrat Cori Bush in her upcoming primary race against St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell. AIPAC's super political action committee, United Democracy Project, has invested over $8.4 million in efforts to defeat Bush, citing her vocal criticism of Israel's response to attacks by Hamas and her opposition to a resolution supporting Israel.

Bush, known for her strong stance against Israel's actions, has referred to the Israeli retaliation as an “ethnic cleansing campaign” and boycotted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech before Congress, labeling him a “war criminal.” Her comments have sparked controversy and divided opinions among constituents.

The race highlights the complexities faced by Democrats in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with differing views on President Joe Biden's administration's response. AIPAC's previous success in unseating progressive U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman underscores the organization's influence in shaping political outcomes.

Bush remains confident in her support from St. Louis voters, emphasizing her consistent advocacy for peace, democracy, and human rights. Despite facing significant financial opposition, she stands firm in her beliefs and commitment to her constituents.

On the other hand, Wesley Bell, a fellow Black candidate with roots in the Ferguson community, has criticized Bush's comments on Israel as “wrong and offensive.” He advocates for a peaceful resolution in the Middle East and emphasizes the importance of protecting innocent lives on both sides of the conflict.

The Missouri primary race has drawn attention from various groups, with AIPAC and DMFI PAC supporting Bell, while progressive organizations like Justice Democrats rally behind Bush. The outcome of this race will not only impact the future of Missouri's representation but also reflect broader debates within the Democratic Party regarding foreign policy and support for Israel.

As the primary election approaches, the contest between Cori Bush and Wesley Bell continues to spark debate and mobilize supporters on both sides, underscoring the significance of this race in shaping the Democratic landscape.
