Priyanka Chopra Jonas has recalled one of the first times her now-husband Nick Jonas ever saw her, describing the moment as “unfathomable”.
Chopra, now 40, began dating the Jonas brothers singer, 30, in 2018, after they walked the Met Gala red carpet together the previous year.
They tied the knot months later during a lavish ceremony in Jodhpur, India. Last year, the couple announced the birth of their daughter Malti Marie via surrogacy.
During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Thursday (11 May), the Love Again star said Jonas watched her win the Miss World pageant in 2000, when he was seven years old.
“This was in London, and this was November. I had turned 18 in July, complete child, I had no idea what I was doing or what this world entailed, didn’t have a lot of practice,” Chopra said. “But apparently, my mother-in-law was like, ‘I remember watching you when you won.’”
When she expressed her disbelief, Jonas’s mother Denise Miller-Jonas said she remembered the moment in November “so clearly” because her husband Kevin Sr “loves watching pageants”.
“He, I remember, was watching it, and Nick came and sat down and watched you win,” Denise reportedly told Chopra.
The former Miss World said the idea was “unfathomable” to her because “that was 22 years ago or something. He was seven, I was 17.”
Earlier this year, Chopra explained why she was hesitant to date the “Sucker” singer, highlighting their 10-year age gap.
“I was at the end of my last long relationship before Nick, so I didn’t want to engage as much at that time,” she said. “I was also 35, Nick was 25. I really put a stop on it in a way because I judged a book by its cover. I was like: ‘I want to settle down. I’ve done the fun dating thing.’”
“I was ready to get serious, and not realising that my husband is a 70-year-old man stuck in a 30-year-old’s body,” she added.
The actor, who was recently promoting her new Prime Video show Citadel with Richard Madden, also spoke about her dating history in a separate interview.
Appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast this week, Chopra said she was a “serial monogamist” and jumped from one relationship to the next without allowing herself any time to reflect in between.
“I did not give myself time, at all, between relationships, until my last one.”
The 40-year-old explained that before she met her husband, she took a two-year-long break from dating because she stopped “recognising” who she was.
“I needed to know why I kept on repeating my mistakes,” she explained, adding the mistake was not standing up for herself or “always feeling like I need to be the caretaker”.
