A SMALL private island with breathtaking views of the Inner Hebrides and a rich clan history on the west coast has hit the market.
Torsa, located close to Oban in Argyll and Bute and one of the Slate Islands, has been put up for sale for the first time in 85 years for offers over £1.5 million.
The island spans 270 acres with a peak elevation of 62m and offers stunning views of the surrounding Inner Hebrides.
Torsa, also known as “Thor’s Island”, boasts a rich clan history, most notably the ruins of Casteal nan Con, once a Clan Campbell tower.
The island, inhabited until the 1960s, only has one three-bedroom farmhouse used as a holiday home in recent years.
The white-painted cottage is a 19th-century stone building which has been modernised as a holiday home but has kept its traditional exterior which is typical of Scotland’s west coast homes from the period.
There are also a few farm buildings close to the house with some sheep and Luing cattle too.
Torsa offers plenty of opportunities for exploring the local landscape with Loch Melfort, the islands of the Firth of Lorn, Shuna Island, Jura and the Corryvreckan whirlpool all close by.
The sale comes with three smaller islands, tidal islets only separated at higher stages of the tide, Eilean Fraoch, Glas Eilean,
Torsa Beag as well. Access to the island is via a rigid tube dinghy called Cutty which is kept on a running mooring in Ardnamir Bay on the Isle of Luing.
There are other launch facilities available at the ferry slipway on Luing or from the beach at Ardnamir as the area is great to explore by boat.
Torsa is one of the Slate Islands which are a group of islands, also known as archipelagos, situated in the Inner Hebrides, located off the west coast, north of Jura and southwest of Oban.
Seil, Easdale, Luing, Shuna, Torsa, and Belnahua all make up the Slate Islands as Scarba and Kerrera, which lie nearby, are not usually included.
