Private Midlothian hospital 'scales down' plan to add more beds after review

A private hospital which has been operating for more than a decade has scaled back plans for an extension after a review of its inpatient needs.

Spire Shawfair Park Hospital has revealed its phase two plans to expand, which were approved 15 years ago, have been changed after a review of demand.

It has now applied for planning permission from Midlothian Council to change to approve work to a reduced one wing extension of just 17 additional bedrooms.

A design statement lodged with the council says a review of the requirements of the hospital was held in September last year.

It says: "The second phase was approved for a double height extension to the east wing of the hospital, as well as an upper floor extension to the west wing with a further double height extension to the north, to increase capacity in terms of bedrooms and operating theatres.

"Spire Hospital have reviewed their needs for additional capacity and a meeting was held with Mr Martin Patrick (Midlothian planner) to discuss revised proposals for a scaled back extension to the hospital."

The changes proposed would see no double height extensions on the north and east wings with just the west wing having one upper floor added.

In a supporting statement by agents for the hospital they said: "Spire Shawfair Park Hospital have undertaken a review of their current capacity and have sought to rationalise their future in-patient needs."

The hospital was granted planning permission 15 years ago and opened its doors at Shawfair in 2010.

It is described as a private healthcare facility providing an extensive suite of services for diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions and is in Shawfair Business Park.

The planning application is available to view on Midlothian Council's planning portal.
