Private cars have been permanently banned from College Green in Dublin City Centre in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and improve public transport punctuality.
Dublin City Council has reminded the public that from this Monday, May 29, the new bus corridor comes into effect 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, prohibiting private vehicles from travelling through in all directions.
The section of roadway, known as a Bus Gate, means only public transport and cyclists can avail of its access at College Green, outside Trinity College. Previously, private cars were allowed access outside the hours of 7am to 7pm.

Local Access to the Dame Street/College Green area and to locations such as the Bank of Ireland and Fosters Place will be maintained for general traffic, however they cannot exit using the Bus Gate.
Dublin City Council said these motorists "must now use alternative routes around the area and should not attempt to use this Bus Gate at any time and the same applies to general traffic on College Street."
The aim of the new ban on private cars in the area is in an effort to improve public transport times in Dublin City Centre.
Due to the change, taxi spaces will be reduced in Foster Place and increased at the College Green taxi rank, while the Disabled Parking Bay on Foster Place will be retained.
"Emergency Vehicular access is maintained at all times as the emergency services will be able to access all locations on College Green," the local authority added.
