Four prisoners arrested over the killing of fellow inmate Robert O’Connor in Mountjoy prison are likely to be charged over it, the Irish Mirror can reveal.
The 34-year-old Dubliner was beaten to death in a cell on July 29. He had only begun a six-year sentence for possession of a firearm when he was targeted.
All four suspects were identified by prison staff shortly afterwards and were then removed from Mountjoy to other jails around the country. But each of them was separately brought back to Mountjoy in the past 10 days, arrested and taken away individually for questioning by gardai.

They were afterwards removed from Mountjoy again and returned to their different prisons. A prison source said gardai are “very close to completing their investigation into Robert O’Connor’s death” and that they expected the suspects “to be charged shortly”.
It is understood one of the suspects involved is a top member of the Kinahan cartel with a reputation for violence. It is believed the attack was in revenge for Mr O’Connor targeting an inmate who had previously beaten up his girlfriend.
Mr O’Connor’s family pleaded at his funeral for no retaliation.
