Inmate tried to hide mobile phone in his bottom at Perthshire prison

A former prisoner has been been made the subject of a court order after being caught hiding a mobile phone up his bottom at an open jail in Perthshire.

Grant Macbeth was serving a four-year stretch at HMP Castle Huntly near Longforgan when prison guards spotted the illicit electronic device during a search carried out on December 10, 2019.

Fiscal depute Stewart Hamilton told Perth Sheriff Court on Wednesday last week: “On the date libelled the accused was subjected to a search within his cell.

“Prison officers saw a small black object protruding from his bottom. He was ordered to hand the item over. It was observed to be a small black mobile telephone.”

Defending Macbeth (35), of Bankton Avenue, Livingston, solicitor Paul Ralph said he had secured work following his release from jail and had no further outstanding matters to call in court.

Sheriff Wood opted to sentence Macbeth to complete a drug treatment and testing order and referred the matter to Livingston Sheriff Court where his progress is now scheduled to be reviewed on March 16.
