A prison inmate who left another prisoner with head injuries after the victim insulted the attacker's mother was jailed for 18 months.
William McLean, 21, lashed out after Dylan Stirling, 18, "made comments of a sexual nature" about McLean's mother as they both used phone booths in Polmont Young Offenders' Institution in Stirlingshire, Falkirk Sheriff Court was told.
The incident occurred on the morning February 11th last year (2021) in the jail's Munro Hall.
Prosecutor Katie Cunningham said: "They were using the phones in the halls at the same time.
"While they were standing making their respective calls comments were made by Mr Stirling about the mother of the accused.
"Those comments were of a sexual nature and the accused reacted.
"He began lashing out, striking Mr Stirling repeatedly on the head and body, in possession of a sharp object which looked like a piece of prison cutlery.
"He was also punching Mr Stirling, causing Mr Stirling to fall to the ground.
"While Mr Stirling was on the ground the accused continued to strike him with his fists and with the object he had in his hand."
Warders who saw the attack ran over and McLean was restrained and taken to his cell.
Mr Stirling was left bleeding from a head injury.
A jail nurse glued closed cuts to his head and neck. He also had smaller cuts to his cheek, head and the side of his neck.
McLean, of Glasgow, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Stirling, under provocation, to his injury.
Imposing the jail term, which was back-dated to February last year (2021), Sheriff Simon Collins QC said: "Given the nature of the offence and the accused's record a custodial sentence is inevitable."
