BOSTON — A New Hampshire man died in the custody of Massachusetts State Police hours after being arrested.
The 49-year-old unidentified Fremont man was found unresponsive in his cell at the State Police barracks in Danvers at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. State Police called in Danvers Fire and EMS to perform emergency first aid, but he was declared dead shortly after their arrival.
The man had been stopped and arrested while traveling on Route 99 in Saugus nine hours earlier, at around 2:30 a.m. He had been charged with operating under the influence of drugs, possession of a class B narcotic and speeding.
State Police say they followed their policy and performed “face-to-face checks on his condition every 30 minutes.” State Police will conduct an administrative review of what happened, according to their statement.
No probable cause of death was indicated.
The man’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the death is under investigation by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
