Prisoner dies after vicious assault in Dublin prison

A man has died after he was viciously attacked at a Dublin prison.

Robert O'Connor, 34, who was an inmate at Mountjoy Prison, was rushed to ICU following the assault on Friday evening. He was put on life support in the Mater Hospital after sustaining serious head injuries.

He died following the attack which was carried out by a group of prisoners. O’Connor had only been jailed two days before the attack. He had been sentenced to six-and-a-half years after admitting to the possession of a semi-automatic pistol in Finglas last October.

After being processed in Mountjoy, a “protection assessment” took place and he was moved from one part of the jail to another. However, he did not raise any concerns for his safety before the attack.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said: "The Irish Prison Service can confirm that the prisoner who was seriously injured in an incident in Mountjoy Prison on Friday, July 29 has died. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. The incident continues to be investigated by the IPS and the gardai."

Gardai have not ruled out that the attack was ordered from outside, and investigators are now probing if a Dublin assassin sought approval from a senior Kinahan member in the jail. Additionally, the Irish Mirror revealed how one of the gang “danced” on the victim as he lay prone.
