A recent prison riot in Mozambique's capital, Maputo, has resulted in a tragic loss of life. According to the country's police general commander, Bernardino Rafael, the violent incident claimed the lives of 33 individuals, with an additional 15 people sustaining injuries. The unrest also led to the escape of approximately 1,534 individuals from the prison, although efforts have been made to recapture some of them, with 150 individuals successfully apprehended.
The outbreak of violence within the prison comes amidst a backdrop of escalating civil unrest in Mozambique, which has been linked to the disputed election held in October. The election results extended the stay in power of the long-ruling party, Frelimo, a decision that has been contested by opposition groups and their supporters who allege electoral fraud.
While Police General Commander Rafael attributed the riot to external protests that were taking place near the prison, Justice Minister Helena Kida offered a different perspective, stating that the unrest originated within the prison walls and was not influenced by external factors. The clashes that ensued resulted in the tragic loss of life and injuries in the vicinity of the jail.
The identities of the individuals who lost their lives or were injured in the riot remain unclear at this time. The situation in Mozambique remains tense, with the country's interior minister reporting that at least 21 people were killed in further unrest following the confirmation of Frelimo's victory by the country's top court.
