Halloween costumes come in all shapes and sizes. While many celebrators will look to adopt as scary a persona as possible, others will opt for a more loveable character.
Nintendo characters often make for popular fancy dress costumes for kids and adults alike. A new study, conducted by gaming site Ask Gamblers, discovered the most in-demand Nintendo costumes this Halloween season.
The findings were determined by Google search data, as they analysed the number of searches made for each character. The average global search volume each month was calculated by combining the character name with the term ‘costume’.
Topping the list of the most searched Nintendo costumes across the globe was found to be Princess Peach, with an average monthly search volume of 35,000. While she made her first appearance way back in 1985, in Super Mario Bros., the popularity of the Mushroom Kingdom’s princess is as rife as ever.
This is enhanced further by the character gracing our screens next year in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. film, where she will be voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy. Coming in at second is the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, Pikachu, with the costume boasting a search volume of 26,000 per month.
Completing the top five are iconic Nintendo personalities Mario, Luigi and Yoshi, with the first villain in the list being Bowser in sixth. Here is the complete top 10 and their average monthly global search on Google:
-
Princess Peach (35,000 searches)
-
Pikachu (26,000 searches)
-
Mario (25,000 searches)
-
Luigi (16,000 searches)
-
Yoshi (13,000 searches)
-
Bowser (11,000 searches)
-
Ash Ketchum (10,000 searches)
-
Link (9,000 searches)
-
Waluigi (7,700 searches)
-
Wario (6,300 searches)
A spokesperson from Ask Gamblers commented on the findings: “Although the popularity of Nintendo is no secret, it’s fascinating to see how many people around the world are eager to bring the video game characters to life with costumes. The news of the upcoming Super Marios Bros. movie could certainly be a factor in the interest of costumes belonging to the Mario franchise, but it’s exciting to see the demand for costumes of characters of alternative series such as Link and Ash Ketchum.”
