Princess of Wales posts baby photo of herself to launch Shaping Us campaign

The Princess of Wales has shared a childhood photo of herself as a baby, and asked others to do the same as part of her recently launched campaign.

The campaign, Shaping Us, aims to highlight the importance of early childhood and the impact it can have on later life.

Princess Catherine, who tweeted the image of herself as a baby with her father, said baby photos encourage people to talk about childhood.

"Faces are a baby's best toy," she captioned the post.

"This weekend, we'd love for you all to spend time with your friends, families, colleagues and communities talking about your early childhoods and how they've shaped your lives," she posted.

"I hope you'll also consider joining me in sharing a picture of yourselves before your fifth birthday to help with those conversations and to share some smiles and memories too."

It's reported she was inspired to start Shaping Us while carrying out royal engagements and discovering how often people with ill mental health had experienced troubled early years.

"By focusing our collective time, energy and resources on these most preventative years, we can make a huge difference to the physical and mental health and happiness of generations to come," she said of the campaign's launch.

Celebrities share childhood photos

Members of the public and celebrities followed in sharing their childhood images.

"In support of the princess of Wales here's me with my beloved father, who I miss every day," one Twitter user said in response to the campaign.

Chef Jamie Oliver and England football captain Harry Kane were among the celebrities who joined in to post childhood images.

Oliver said he counted himself lucky for his happy childhood "growing up in his mum and dad's pub".

However some social media users were less enthusiastic about the campaign, coming at a time when many people face up to the cost-of-living crisis.

One twitter user described the campaign as "ill advised":

"I've no doubt it's well-intentioned by loads of people I admire, but seeing all the Shaping Us posts today with the line 'Our early childhood shapes the rest of our lives' has made me want to burst into angry tears all day."

"Feel like this too," another Twitter user responded.

"What about the under 5s who need help/support/funding NOW? The broken childcare/SEN system?... Celeb kid pics, princesses and a wishy washy campaign are fixing nowt."

"... Really wish KM got the real issues in the real world."
