Princess Eugenie broke royal tradition by introducing baby son to the world in new way

It's a day of celebration today for Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank - their son August turns one.

It was exactly a year ago that the couple welcomed their baby son into the world - and his middle name Philip pays tribute to his late great-grandfather Prince Philip.

Royal fans usually get their first glimpse of a new arrival through an official photocall - with the Duchess of Cambridge and even Sarah Ferguson - Eugenie's mum - showing off their newborns on leaving hospital.

However, this time last year, Eugenie broke tradition by posting the first sweet image of August on her Instagram account.

Eugenie shared the adorable photo of August, showing his hands with those of his mum and dad alongside a caption of three blue hearts.

However, there was also an official statement from Buckingham Palace, which read: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie was safely delivered a son today, 9th February 2021, at 08:55hrs at The Portland Hospital. Jack Brooksbank was present.

"The baby weighs 8lbs 1oz.

"This is Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s first child, The Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York’s first grandchild, and the ninth great-grandchild for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

When he was born, August was 11th in line to the throne, but the arrival of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's daughter Lilibet and his cousin Sienna Mapelli Mozzi has seen him now sit in 13th place.

He was christened last year in a rare royal double christening alongside Zara and Mike Tindall's young son Lucas.

In a documentary last year, Eugenie revealed August got to meet Philip shortly before his death in April.

Holding back the tears, Eugenie explained: "We named August, August Philip because grandpa has been such a huge, inspiring character in my life.

"I brought little August to come and meet him and told him that we had named him after him and it was such a lovely moment.

"We were very lucky to do that."
