Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell wants to tell William and Harry the 'truth' about their mother

The man who Princess Diana described as her "rock" has said that he wants to tell Prince William and Prince Harry "the truth" about private moments he shared with her.

Paul Burrell, who acted as Diana's butler for 10 years until her death in 1997, revealed last month that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The former royal servant said that his illness has focused his attention on telling Diana's sons "what they really should know" about their mother while he still has the chance.

Paul, 64, told The Mirror: "I spent many hours with Diana, during her happiest times as well as her darkest times. She confided in me and there are many things I have never spoken about, but now I feel the time is right."

He added: "I think what I have to say could bring the boys back together, which Diana would have desperately wanted. I will only tell them the truth, that is all. I am not looking for anything in return."

William and Harry have become increasingly estranged since Harry departed his role as a working member of the royal family, moving to the US in 2020 to start a new life with wife Meghan. Harry has since made a number of explosive claims about his brother and other members of the family in a Netflix documentary and his memoir Spare, including that William "screamed and shouted" at him over his decision to step back from royal duties.

Paul, who has previously described himself as Diana's "best friend" and claimed she told him he was "the only man she ever trusted", said that he hopes sharing his stories of her might help the brothers reconcile. "There are things that happened in their mother's world, which they may not have knowledge of. And I think it just might fill in some blanks," he said.

The Princess of Wales' former butler also admitted: "I think Diana would say to me, 'Paul, you must make this a priority. You must go and see my boys'," he admitted. "I know some of it isn’t pretty, but if I leave this place and go somewhere else they'll never know. I think they should know."
