Princess Diana's devastating explanation for refusing to wear Chanel after divorce

Princess Diana is an icon for so many reasons, from her efforts towards HIV and AIDs awareness, to her fearless ability to always speak her mind.

But, while her philanthropic efforts will always be a big part of how she's remembered, Diana was also adored by people all over the world for her fashion.

The late princess wore a number of memorising outfits over the years, which fashion lovers continue to recreate to this very day, from glitzy ball gowns to her casual sports wear.

One particularly memorable outfit was her iconic little black 'revenge' dress, which she wore to a function at the Serpentine in 1994 following her divorce from Prince Charles.

During her marriage to the Prince of Wales, Diana could often be seen wearing her Chanel - one of her favourite high end brands, and often no outfit would be complete without a signature piece.

However, it was noted by fans that once she and Charles parted ways, she no longer wore anything Chanel, and it was later revealed she had associated the brand with the heartbreak of her high-profile divorce.

In 1996, during a trip to Australia, she is said to have admitted to designer Jayson Brundson that the luxury fashion brand's double C logo reminded her too much of Charles and Camilla.

He told Harper's Bazaar : "It was definitely the timing, it being post-divorce. She would have seen linked Cs and they would have just reminded her of Charles and Camilla. The shoes were quite boldly Chanel, I think they had gold linked Cs on them.

"And I think for photo optics, people would have honed in on that considering it was so fresh after the divorce as well."

Charles and Diana's divorce was finalised in 1996 - three years after they initially separated.
