Princess Diana in Pakistan: Throwback shots of Prince William's mother visiting the country in the 1990s

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continue their tour of Pakistan, they follow in the footsteps of William's mother Princess Diana, who visited the country three times in the 1990s.

On Wednesday the Duchess of Cambridge was gifted with a regimental hat of the Chitral Scouts of Pakistan, as well as a shawl which was embroidered locally.

The hat is similar to one gifted to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana.

During her visits to Pakistan Princess Diana spent time with her friend Jemima Goldsmith (then Jemima Khan), who was married to Imran Khan, former cricket legend and current Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Khan hosted Diana in Pakistan for the final time in 1997, just months before her death.

Prince William first met Khan when he was 11. He recalled this week that when they first met, Khan told him that he would be Pakistan’s Prime Minister one day.

Today William and Kate visited SOS Children's Village and played a game of cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Later today they will follow in the footsteps of Princess Diana by going to the same cancer hospital she visited the year before her death: Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.
