Princess Diana fans spot strange detail in photos of her and Prince Charles

Hundreds of photos were taken of Princess Diana and Prince Charles over the course of their 15-year marriage, from their engagement to the birth of their sons Prince Harry and Prince William.

However, there's something odd about a few of the pictures that still baffles fans decades on - Charles' height.

Many of the snaps show Charles standing several inches taller than Diana, when in reality, the couple were actually the same height, exactly 1.78m, which is just under 5ft 9.

When you see the couple standing next to each other, it's indisputable, as confirmed by their official engagement photo, anniversary snaps and cute family portraits.

When they stood on the hospital steps after the birth of Prince William, for example, you can clearly see that they were around the same height.

Diana even chose her wedding shoes carefully to ensure she wasn't taller than Charles, and instead of wearing heels, she opted for a practically flat shoe.

However, it appears as if the pair were arranged to make Charles look significantly taller than Diana, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not.

The issue came to light again when a picture of an old stamp featuring the couple went viral.

Of course, many fans shared their thoughts with one person commenting: "That's why she always tilted her head down. She also wore flats or very short heels."

Another suggested that he may have been "standing on a box" in the photos to give people the illusion that he was significantly taller than his wife.

According to an article on The Society Pages , it may have something to do with the societal expectation that men should be taller than women.

Lisa Wade PhD, a professor at Occidental College, suggested: "When Charles and Diana were posed together formally.

"However, they were typically arranged so as to suggest that he was significantly taller than her, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not.

"This effort to make Charles appear taller is a social commitment to the idea that men are taller and women shorter. When our own bodies, and our chosen mates, don’t follow this rule, sometimes we’ll go to great lengths to preserve the illusion."

While this wasn't confirmed as the official reason, it could be an explanation as to why Charles and Diana were the same height in most of their pictures together.
