As a royal couple, Princess Diana and Prince Charles were pictured together countless times over the course of their 15-year marriage, from their engagement to the arrival of their sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
However, there is something strange about many of their photos that still puzzles fans a decade on - Charles' height.
According to the Mirror, many images have Charles appearing several inches taller than his wife, when they were actually the exact same height - 1.78m, which is just short of 5ft 9.
When the two are pictured standing beside each other, it's obvious, as confirmed by their official engagement photo, anniversary pics and sweet family portraits.
When they stood on the hospital steps after the birth of Prince William, for example, you can clearly see that they were around the same height.
Diana even chose her wedding shoes carefully to ensure she wasn't taller than Charles, and instead of wearing heels, she opted for a practically flat shoe.
However, it appears as if the pair were arranged to make Charles look significantly taller than Diana, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not.
The issue came to light again when a picture of an old stamp featuring the couple went viral.
Of course, many fans shared their thoughts with one person commenting: "That's why she always tilted her head down. She also wore flats or very short heels."
Another suggested that he may have been "standing on a box" in the photos to give people the illusion that he was significantly taller than his wife.
According to an article on The Society Pages , it may have something to do with the societal expectation that men should be taller than women.
Lisa Wade PhD, a professor at Occidental College, suggested: "When Charles and Diana were posed together formally.
"However, they were typically arranged so as to suggest that he was significantly taller than her, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not.
"This effort to make Charles appear taller is a social commitment to the idea that men are taller and women shorter. When our own bodies, and our chosen mates, don’t follow this rule, sometimes we’ll go to great lengths to preserve the illusion."
While this wasn't confirmed as the official reason, it could be an explanation as to why Charles and Diana were the same height in most of their pictures together.
