Princess Anne shares Queen's wicked humour and uses jokes as 'backhanded compliments'

As the Royal Family have been attending events to mourn the loss of the Queen and welcome King Charles III as the new monarch, the public have been able to see more of Princess Anne - and the similarities she has to her late mother.

A body language expert recently commented on how the 72-year-old Princess Royal has been channelling Queen Elizabeth II with her stoicism and "stiff upper lip", remaining strong as many of her relatives shed tears and grieve their loss. And while she certainly has become a pillar of strength for her family, Princess Anne is also said to share a much lighter quality with her mother - her wicked sense of humour.

The Queen was known for her sense of humour and her good friend Sir David Attenborough recently shared how their relationship was filled with "precious laughter".

The monarch made numerous one-liners and had funny interactions with the public and it seems her daughter follows in her footsteps.

Anne's official biographer, Brian Hoey, previously told The Express all about the royal's sense of humour and how she used jokes to 'show affection'.

He recalled how he had been with Anne in Houston, Texas and attended an event with civic dignitaries. While there, one congratulated the princess on her mother being "re-elected" while another claimed to know her grandfather - Winson Churchill.

On their way out, he claims Anne said: "My God, it's enough to make your hair curl."

He continued: "And she looked at me and mine was receding quite a lot at the time and she said, 'Well perhaps not in your case'."

Hoey added: "Her private secretary said to me that evening: 'You know what, when she made a joke about you, she said that as a term of affection.

"She would never make a joke about any stranger, only about somebody she was comfortable with.

"So in a way, it was a backhanded compliment, if you like!"

Princess Anne is also said to have shared a love of horses and fashion with her mother and it's thought the pair had a very strong bond.

The hard-working royal most recently made the bold decision to accompany her mother's coffin from the Balmoral estate to Edinburgh.
