Princess Anne reckons Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle face 'difficult' disadvantage in royal life

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are arguably two of the most famous women in the world, after their lives changed drastically after marrying into royalty.

The two sisters in law couldn't live more different lives, as the Duchess of Cambridge is set to become Queen in the future, and Meghan, alongside Prince Harry have ditched the royals for a life in California.

Few people in the royal family have captured global attention like Kate and Meghan, but long before their time, there was another headline grabbing member of royalty - Princess Anne.

The Queen's daughter Princess Anne was arguably the first 'modern princess,' posing for Vogue magazine on her 21st birthday and living up to her stylish reputation of bright colours, garish 70s patterns and statement hats, writes The Mirror.

Princess Anne has also spoke out about popularity and the added pressure of social media, which the younger members of the royal family need to deal with today, compared to when she was a young adult.

In an ITV documentary celebrating the Princess Royal's 70th birthday, fashion writer Sarah Mower explained that much of Anne's popularity came down to the fact she was "very much her own person, not her mother or her aunt."

"She was very fashionable as a young woman, and she was her own person within those parameters," Sarah added.

But, while Anne certainly made her mark on royal history, she has previously spoken about the added pressure faced by young royals - particularly young women - in today's modern age.

"The pressure that is applied to the younger members of the family, it's always worse," she explained in Anne: The Princess Royal at 70.

"That's what the media is interested in. That's hard sometimes to deal with. But there was no social media in my day, and it's probably made it more difficult."
