Princess Anne inherits £1m piece of jewellery that was the Queen's favourite

Jewellery is a very personal choice and one that can become a hallmark of someone's style. Queen Elizabeth II was rarely without her pearls, for instance, and of course, diamonds were a girls best friend for Marilyn Monroe.

Following the death of the Queen, stories of who will inherit jewellery items from the late monarch have surfaced but it is one of the Queen's favourite pieces that Princess Anne stands to become the new owner of.

During her 70-year reign, the Queen acquired some simply breath-taking pieces of jewellery. Royal watchers will have gasped at some stunning tiaras, necklace, earrings and broches over the years. However, one piece holds not only particular monetary value but also sentimental attachment and following the monarch's passing, this has been passed down to her only daughter, Princess Anne.

According to the Express, it is the three-strand pearl necklace, which became synonymous with Queen Elizabeth II. Steeped in royal history, Queen Elizabeth II's father - King George VI - gifted the Queen the beautiful item and for 70 years, this piece of jewellery has been a constant connection to her father.

King George VI died on February 6, 1952, when Princess Anne was around just one-and-a-half years old. However, now the necklace serves as a way for the Princess Royal to connect with her late mother and her grandfather.

Steven Stone jewellers, indicated the value of the piece, saying: "Queen Elizabeth has some of the most valuable jewels in the world, so it would be fair to assume that this three-strand pearl necklace and her earrings are made from natural pearls. Only a very small percentage of pearls used for jewellery are natural, with most of them being cultured.

"If these pieces are made up from natural pearls, they are going to be incredibly rare, not to mention valuable. One single natural pearl is worth around £3,000, and as the Queen has a three-strand necklace, this could be worth anywhere from £600,000 to £1,000,000."

According to David Douglas Diamonds and Jewellery, the Queen loved her pearl necklace so much that she actually had a few backups and could rotate them freely. A jewellery expert claimed that the late Queen had a second identical necklace made. And in 1953 a third three-strand pearl necklace joined her collection when she was gifted it by Emir of Qatar. The only thing that set this necklace apart from the other two was that it was fastened with a diamond clasp.

The item is now in Princess Anne's possession and she was spotted wearing the necklace from King George VI at a reception for the English Speaking Union in New York on Friday, October 7. She paired this with some pearl drop earrings.

Previously, Princess Kate was spotted wearing one of the three-strand pearl necklaces during a lunch held for governors-general of the Commonwealth nations at Buckingham Palace ahead of the state funeral.
