Prince William's proud dad moments - sweet nickname, consoling hug and Louis joke

Prince William's 40th birthday celebrations would have been markedly different from when he turned 30, 10 years ago.

Not least because in the last decade he has become a proud dad to his three children with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince George, who is nine next month, arrived first in 2013 followed by daughter Princess Charlotte in 2015.

After the arrival of little Prince Louis in 2017, his young family seems to be complete and an adorable photo of William and his children was released at the weekend for Father's Day.

And there have been several moments throughout the years that show how he has taken fatherhood firmly in his stride...

First-time dad

On July 22, 2013, William became a father for the first time when wife Kate gave birth to their eldest child Prince George.

Shortly afterwards, the public got their first glimpse of William as a dad as he and Kate presented their baby to the world.

For part of the photocall, William cradled George in his arms and gushed about how he and Kate "could not be happier".

He also said the baby "had a good pair of lungs on him" and described him as a big boy before Kate revealed William had already done a nappy change.

And after fitting George into his car seat with ease, William could not help but smile as he drove his family away from the hospital.

Following the births of both Charlotte and Louis, William has proudly posed with Kate outside the same hospital with their newborns.

Like many proud dads, it seems William has special nicknames for his children - and his one for daughter Charlotte is incredibly sweet.

The sweet name was revealed in 2019 when Wills and Kate were joined by their kids at the Chelsea Flower Show, as Kate had helped to design a garden for the show.

While playing on a swing in the garden, William called out to Charlotte, asking her to come and give him a push, but instead of saying 'Charlotte', he called for 'Mignonette.'

The French word is said to mean "small, sweet, and delicate" or "cute," and is pronounced like min-yon-ett.

George's football hug

Many people have hobbies and interests that have been inspired by their parents - and it appears that this is the case for George.

Both William and George are massive football fans - and last summer the pair were spotted enjoying two England games at Wembley in the Euros, including the final.

And in an adorable father-son moment, the pair were caught on camera hugging and celebrating when Luke Shaw put England ahead against Italy just minutes into the game.

But after Italy equalised and England went on to lose a penalty shoot-out, George looked gutted and summed up the mood of the country as the Three Lions fell at the final hurdle - although dad William was able to put his consoling hands on his shoulders.

Balcony pride

One of the most high-profile events that William and his children have all attended together is the Queen's recent Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

On the final day of the bank holiday weekend, the Cambridges joined Her Majesty as well as Prince Charles and Camilla for an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

And proud William broke out into a smile as George, Charlotte and Louis waved to the crowds from the palace

He was seen beaming as the trio stood to attention and joined in with the National Anthem as they stood alongside their great grandmother the Queen.

Joke about Louis

William's youngest child Louis arguably became the star of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations with his cheeky antics and funny faces.

The image of him covering his ears as the RAF flypast roared above Buckingham Palace during Trooping the Colour made headlines around the world.

And it didn't stop William from making a reference to Louis' clear enjoyment of the celebrations in a cute message.

He and Kate thanked the public for their messages of support and reactions to the photographs on Twitter.

They wrote: "We all had an incredible time, especially Louis..." alongside the side-eyes emoji in a nod to his adorable behaviour.

Meanwhile, an insider close to William said that he would have "loved" the images of Louis, especially the one of him on the balcony covering his ears.

They told The Telegraph's royal expert Camilla Tominey: "It wasn’t as if he was being naughty or anything. They were just kids being kids. Of course, as parents, they love to see all the photographs the next day."

Charlotte's important message

Just last week, William visited the England women's football team at their training base in Burton-upon-Trent as they prepare for next month’s Euros on home soil.

He was presented with three England jerseys adorned with his children’s names by captain Leah Williamson.

Thanking them for the gift, he proudly revealed Cambridge could one day be written on the back of a goalkeeper shirt as Charlotte, seven, is keen to get between the sticks.

He said: “Charlotte wanted me to tell you that she's really good in goal.

“She said please tell them that. Budding star for the future.”
