Prince William may consider making significant changes to Queen Camilla’s role within the royal family once he ascends the throne, according to royal experts. Royal author Christopher Anderson has claimed that the relationship between William and his stepmother has always been distant, and that the Prince of Wales “merely tolerates” Camilla, who in turn has been “a little afraid” of him.
Anderson suggests that while William may not strip Camilla of her title, her presence within the royal spotlight could be scaled back once he becomes king. “She will probably still partake in some royal engagements here and there,” Anderson said, indicating a more reserved role for the current Queen Consort in the future monarchy.
Echoing these sentiments, another royal commentator, Joe Little, told USA Today—as reported by The Royal Observer—that Prince William will have full authority over decisions once he becomes king, including matters concerning Camilla’s involvement in royal duties.
“The new King William would call all the shots, it would be down to him—in accordance with his father’s and stepmother’s wishes, of course. But every aspect of her public and private life would be reviewed,” Little explained. While Camilla’s influence may be reassessed, her royal status will likely remain unchanged.

According to protocol, she would retain the title of Queen Consort regardless of any redefined responsibilities. “Queen Consort Camilla would still keep that title, much like the Queen Mother (the late Queen Elizabeth II’s mother) kept that title until she passed at age 101,” Little noted.
The speculation comes as Prince William continues to take on more royal responsibilities, particularly during King Charles’ ongoing treatment for cancer. With growing visibility and influence, royal watchers have increasingly looked toward what kind of monarch William will eventually be—and how he may choose to shape the institution.
The dynamics between Prince William and Queen Camilla have long been a subject of public curiosity, rooted in the history of his parents’ troubled marriage and Camilla’s once-controversial place in the royal narrative. Despite a more accepted public image in recent years, reports suggest that private tensions still linger.
Though no official plans have been confirmed, royal insiders suggest that William’s future leadership could bring a more modern, streamlined monarchy—one where Queen Camilla’s role is considerably less prominent than it is today.
