Prince William modernising royal family is 'about survival' as tour reflection begins

Lorraine Kelly was keen to discuss reports that Prince William plans to modernise the royal family as she hosted her show on Monday morning.

Lorraine, 62, invited The Mirror's Royal Editor Russell Myers onto the ITV breakfast show to chat about Kate and William's recent tour of the Caribbean.

The TV presenter began by saying: "So no surprise really, there's been a big fall out about this, hasn't there? Lots of heated meetings I expect.

Russell replied: "Yes, I think the inquiry has already started. The mood in the camp is one of reflection and I think that they really need to look at what went wrong.

Russell Myers spoke to Lorraine Kelly on Monday morning about the recent royal tour (ITV)

"There were lot of instances of success in this tour. However, the tour was marred by protest, small in numbers but mighty in voice I suppose. Whether William's speeches on slavery went far enough, certainly campaigners didn't think they did, in Jamaica especially."

Russell continued: "The optics of the tour weren't great. I understand that William had even raised concerns before they went, about potentially travelling in an open top Land Rover in Jamaica, and it seems as though he was proved right because a lot of people were talking about them.

"It really did sort of sour the note of the tour, which was otherwise successful. However, we're in a very different world, the Black Lives Matter movement has really moved everyone's thoughts on and focused a lot of institution's minds."

Lorraine then said: "They looked out of date and out of touch at times, not necessarily their fault in a way. But William has vowed to shake things up and he knows he has to in order to survive."

Russell replied: "Yeah totally and it is about survival. He's spoken about a need to change the monarchy, the monarchy has to move with the times and they are the modern faces of that monarchy."

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITV Hub.
