Prince Philip's savage joke about David and Victoria Beckham's wedding thrones

Prince Philip's quick wit and controversial sense of humour got him into hot water more than once during his long life.

Very few people were safe from his jokes and he used the Queen's last Jubilee back in 2012 to mock David and Victoria Beckham.

To mark the occasion 10 years ago, the Monarch and her beloved husband took part in a River Pageant however they didn't sit on the thrones placed out for them.

When someone asked Philip why they weren't using them, he quipped: "We'd have looked like Mr and Mrs Beckham, wouldn't we?"

Surprising some with his knowledge of popular culture, the comment was a reference to the David and Victoria's 1999 wedding, during which they sat on huge red velvet thrones.

After the Duke passed away in 2021, retired football star Beckham and his singer wife were among thousands who paid tribute to him on social media.

Sharing a heartfelt note on his Instagram page, David said: "My thoughts and sympathies go to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family as we join them to mourn the loss of Prince Philip.

“A public figure to the world but first a loving husband, father and grandfather. Today is a day to remember his life and incredible service to Britain and around the world. Rest In Peace Your Highness."

Victoria Beckham added in her own post: "Saddened to hear about the passing of Prince Philip today. My heart goes out to the Royal family during this difficult time."

David will be back rubbing shoulders with royalty this weekend as he is part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, which celebrates her 70 years on the throne.

According to Prince Philip's good friend Gyles Brandreth, the Duke was "easy-going, unaffected and good-humoured" with members of the public and royal staff, reports the Mail.

"Once, coming down the back stairs with him after some lunchtime function at a club in central London, we passed the kitchen. The Duke stopped, turned back and marched in, unannounced, to meet the chefs and dish-washers.

"There was laughter, back-slapping, joshing: an enviable display of people skills and unselfconscious charm. The only time I've seen it quite as well done was recently — by Prince William."

Gyles also said Philip was fiercely protective of the Queen but moaned that she spent too much time on the phone.

Gyles said Philip was “incandescent” at a Royal Variety Performance after a comedian aimed a poorly considered joke her way.

Gyles, 73, said: “For more than 70 years, he did everything he could to safeguard her person and her dignity.

" Prince Philip was incandescent and descended on the producer in the interval: ‘I’ve been coming to this for 50 years. It never ends on time. The jokes are lavatorial. And now you insult the Queen!’”
