Prince Harry has been filmed speaking German at an event in Berlin for the Invictus Games.
The Duke of Sussex opened the speech on Tuesday by confidently speaking in German in his first public appearance since it was confirmed he would be attending the King’s coronation.
Harry appeared in a video shown at the event to mark 150 days until the Invictus Games begin in Düsseldorf in September.
He thanked Hendrik Wüst, the prime minister of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, along with members of parliament and Team Germany for their support.
He said: “Guten Abend, meine Damen und Herren. First and foremost I would like to thank Prime Minister Wüst, members of parliament, Team Germany and all those gathered here tonight for your continued support. We are just 150 days away.”
The phrase translates to “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen”.
In contrast to his father King Charles’s good knowledge of the language, Harry has previously joked about his lack of understanding of German in 2015 during a lesson on a royal tour of New Zealand.
He said at the time: “I learned French at school but I've forgotten almost all of it. I'm sorry. I really wanted to learn Spanish, but my headmaster told me not to bother. I wish I could speak German.”
On his state visit to Germany last month, King Charles gave a speech to German parliamentarians partly in the language.
The Invictus Games were established by Prince Harry in 2014 and sees wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women compete in sports events.
He has said the inspiration came from a visit to the Warrior Games in the United States, where he witnessed the ability of sport to help both psychologically and physically.
It comes after Buckingham Palace confirmed Prince Harry will be attending the King’s coronation on Saturday, May 6 at Westminster Abbey.
However, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan and the couple’s two children, Archie and Lilibet, will remain at home in California.
It will be the first time Prince Harry has been publicly seen with the Royal Family since his bombshell memoir Spare was published.
The book vividly revealed the depth of his disagreements with other members of the Royal Family, including fights with his older brother Prince William.
