Prince Harry said Kate Middleton was "a prisoner in Kensington Palace", according to royal expert

According to a royal expert, it was once claimed by Prince Harry that the Duchess of Cambridge was "almost a prisoner" at her home in Kensington Palace. The London palace is currently home to Prince William, the Duchess and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, but recent reports suggest that they could soon be moving to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate.

Royal expert and author, Ingrid Seward, says the move could give Kate and her family a lot more freedom, reports the Daily Mirror. Prince Harry also made the move from Kensington to Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate.

Ingrid told True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat that: "I think what William and Catherine will have for their children is the freedom they didn't have at Kensington Palace. I remember Harry saying to a friend of mine that Catherine was almost a prisoner at Kensington Palace, and I thought don't be ridiculous, it's the most gorgeous place to live in London."

She added: "Then I thought, in a way they are prisoners, they have a beautiful house and garden but beyond that garden are hundreds of people every day and massive security. Catherine can't walk in the park like Diana used to, as times have changed.

"The only place to go is a field where the helicopters land, so you are very imprisoned. Everyone knows what you’re doing and where you are.” The royal couple will keep Kensington Palace as their main London base if they made the move, whilst also retaining Anmer Hall, which they use regularly.

The Times were reportedly told by a friend that once the children are through "the school years" they plan to move to Norfolk on a more permanent basis. The friend added: ""They absolutely love it up there, it's their happy place."

The move to Windsor would also mean that the couple are nearer to the Duchess's parents, who live less than an hour's car journey away in the village of Bucklebury. In time it has been reported that the Cambridges could move into Windsor Castle, where the Queen has lived since the pandemic and death of Prince Philip.

It has also been reported that when he becomes King, Prince Charles intends to spend his reign at Buckingham Palace and does not intend to spend as much time at the castle.
