Prince Harry's sniping digs at William - terrifying rage, private text and no apology

They were once the closest of brothers who grew up in the spotlight while enduring the painful split of their parents as well as the tragic death of their mother side-by-side.

But in recent times, the relationship between heir to the throne Prince William and his younger brother Prince Harry has reached breaking point.

It was reportedly sparked by William's concerns over Harry's fast-developing relationship with Meghan Markle and the tense row quickly boiled over - with the younger prince accusing The Firm of racism and claiming his brother was "trapped" within the royal system in his bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

And now with the release of Harry & Meghan, the couple's six-part explosive Netflix series, the brother's bond appears to show no signs of repairing any time soon.

It comes after Harry made a series of digs against William in the docuseries and even details private moments between the pair. William, along with the rest of the royal family, have declined to comment on the contents of the show.

Here we look at some of the bombshell moments and swipes at William by Harry in the show...

William's rage

In a highly pointed comment aimed at his older brother, Harry claims that he was left "terrified" when William began "screaming and shouting" at him during a key meeting.

In the fifth episode, the Duke of Sussex recalled the Sandringham Summit on January 13, 2021, where plans were discussed for Harry and Meghan to move abroad.

He said: "I went in with the same proposal that we’d already made publicly, but once I got there I was given five options – one being all in, no change, five being all out.

“I chose option three in the meeting – half in, half out. Have our own jobs but also work in support of the Queen.

“It became very clear very quickly that goal was not up for discussion or debate. It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and my father say things that just simply weren’t true. And my grandmother, you know, quietly sit there and take it all in.

“But you have to understand that, from the family’s perspective, especially from hers, there are ways of doing things and her ultimate, sort of, mission, goal/responsibility is the institution.”

Bullying statement

In yet another attack on William, Harry then claims he did not give his permission for a joint statement to be put out dismissing bullying claims - and says a wedge was driven between the pair.

Speaking over clips of the brothers playing in an old fire truck and newspaper headlines about the acrimony in their relationship in episode five, Harry said: "I mean, the saddest part of it was this wedge created between me and my brother so that he’s now on the institution's side.

"And I get, part of that I get. I understand right? That’s his inheritance, so to some extent it's already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution.

"That day, a story came out that part of the reason why Meghan and I were leaving was because William had bullied us out.

"And once I got in the car after the meeting, I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother’s name squashing the story about him bullying us out of the family.

"I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that. And I rang M and I told her and she burst into floods of tears because within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."

Text reaction

In episode six, it appears to show the couple watching their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey but the television screen is not shown.

The documentary moves to the following day with the couple sat at a desk behind their laptops and Harry pulls a mock surprised face and throws his hands up with the words “shut up” when Meghan says “ Beyonce just texted”.

In other footage Harry holds up his phone to Meghan to show her a text from William and her reaction is to say “wow” as she looks at its screen.

Harry says “I wish I knew what to do” and Meghan replies “I know. Let’s take a breather. Get some air and decide,” and they hug.

No apology

Just weeks after Harry and Meghan's bombshell Oprah interview, Harry's grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh died.

He returned to the UK for the funeral at Windsor Castle and was seen chatting to William and Charles - fuelling hope it would be the first steps in repairing their relationship.

But when asked about what it was like returning to the UK for the funeral in episode six, Harry said: "It was hard, especially spending time having chats with my brother and my father who just were very much focussed on the same misinterpretation of the whole situation.

"So none of us really wanted to have to talk about it at my grandfather’s funeral, but we did.

"I’ve had to make peace with the fact that I’m probably never going to get genuine accountability or a genuine apology.

"You know, my wife and I, we’re moving on. We were focussed on what’s coming next."

Heartbreaking promise

In the fourth episode, Harry reveals he and William made a pact that their offices would not leak stories or brief journalists about each other.

Referring to the royal communications teams, Harry said: “William and I both saw what happened in our dad’s office and we made an agreement that we would never let that happen to our office.”

However, he later claims: "I would far rather get destroyed in the press than play along with this game or this business of trading, and to see my brother's office copy the very same thing that we promised the two of us would never ever do that was heartbreaking."

Meghan added: “We were in this bubble, where everything is controlled by them. I couldn’t even text my friends a photo.

“You do as you’re told but your world just becomes more and more like this,” she said, gesturing with the gap between her hands getting smaller.

Meghan's protection

In the second episode, Harry claimed the royals asked why Meghan should be "protected" from media speculation, alleging he was told it was something all royal women - including Princess Diana and Kate - have to go through.

The Duke said the Palace told them to say nothing when it came to stories printed about them - which is in line with the family's 'Never Complain, Never Explain' motto.

He told the camera that his relatives - although he doesn't explicity mention William - said their wives had to endure press intrusion in the early days of their relationships, so when he started dating Meghan she shouldn't expect any special treatment.

As he speaks, a montage of photographers taking snaps of his mum Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson and the then Kate Middleton plays over his voice.

Harry said: "The direction from the Palace was don't say anything.

"But what people need to understand is, as far as a lot of the family were concerned, everything that she was being put through, they had been put through as well.

"So it was almost like a rite of passage, and some of the members of the family were like 'my wife had to go through that, so why should your girlfriend be treated any differently? Why should you get special treatment? Why should she be protected?'

"I said 'the difference here is the race element.'"

Jarring encounter

Meanwhile it's not just Harry, who seemed to take a swipe at William and wife Kate, Meghan does too.

In one candid confessional during the second episode, Meghan recalled how she met William and Kate for the first time and how she didn't realise a lot of Brits find hugging "jarring".

She said: "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.

"I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.

"I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.

"There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me."
