King Charles had planned to give his granddaughter Lilibet a very lavish gift for her second birthday - before Prince Harry handed him a 'warning' on what to purchase.
The monarch was instructed to opt for a 'less extravagant' gift than he had planned by his second-born son, according to OK! Magazine. A source said Charles had "his aides looking at custom-made cubby houses, similar to what the queen and Princess Margaret had when they were girls."
The insider added: "He wants to give Lili something she will use and be hers. She’ll remember it forever – it’s going to be the ultimate surprise."
However, it's unclear whether the King heeded Harry's wishes or went all out for the youngster, who is seventh in line to the throne. Royal family sources have remained tight-lipped about Lili's party - but it's been reported that her party took place at Harry and Meghan’s £16 million Montecito home.
And despite the King's private plans for his granddaughter's birthday celebrations, he - alongside other senior royals - noticeably chose not to share a public birthday tribute on Twitter, as is usually the custom.
A royal source told the same publication it was because they "don’t mark the birthdays of non-working members". "They, of course, wish Lilibet a very happy birthday, but nothing will be put out on any channels," the insider claimed.
It marks a different policy to that of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who honoured her great-granddaughter with a Twitter post for her first birthday last June. "Wishing Lilibet a very Happy 1st Birthday!" the Queen shared via her official social media account at the time.
However since then, the relationship between Harry and Meghan and his family has plunged to its lowest point yet following the release of their Netflix docu-series and his tell-all memoir, Spare.
Earlier this month, meanwhile, it was revealed that Lilibet's big brother, Prince Archie celebrated his fourth birthday in May by receiving an incredible gift himself.
The eldest son of Harry and Meghan Markle, turned four on the same day as King Charles' Coronation, got a brand new bike with stabilisers.
The generous present was gifted and delivered to Archie by a bike store local to Harry and Meghan's Montecito mansion - with the couple later sending the owners of the shop a sweet note to thank them.
Their thank you letter was posted on Instagram by the owners of the Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop, who said they had just received the "lovely letter".
