Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Sussex titles may be in jeopardy if the couple continues to release bombshell revelations about the royal family, according to a royal insider. A source told the Daily Mail that while revoking their titles would require an Act of Parliament, it remains a possibility if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex publish another explosive book or give another controversial interview.
The renewed discussion surrounding their titles comes after Meghan made a firm statement about the significance of the Sussex name during a filmed conversation with actress Mindy Kaling in her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
During the exchange, Kaling repeatedly referred to her as “Meghan Markle,” prompting the Duchess to correct her. “It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m ‘Sussex’ now,” Meghan said. Meghan also spoke to People magazine about how the title has taken on greater significance since starting a family with Prince Harry.
“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,” she shared. “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H, and I all have together.” She went on to say that the Sussex name is now “part of our love story.”

The royal source suggested that Meghan’s emphasis on the title may have been a strategic move, possibly a “warning shot” to the monarchy, reinforcing just how much the name means to her and Prince Harry. Speculation over their titles has persisted since the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

While they were allowed to retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, they were prohibited from using them in a working royal capacity. Calls to strip them of their titles have resurfaced with each major revelation the couple has made about the inner workings of the royal family.
As tensions between the Sussexes and the monarchy continue to simmer, the future of their royal titles remains uncertain. Whether the couple’s public statements will ultimately prompt further action from the palace or the British government remains to be seen.
