Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have come under fire for a comment made about Nottingham Cottage, where they lived together from 2017 to 2019. Prince Harry actually moved into the property from Clarence House after leaving the army.
After Harry proposed to Meghan the couple subsequently resided together in the cottage following their engagement before they wed at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle the same year. But in April 2019, the couple moved to Frogmore Cottage before the birth of their first child, son Archie.
But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared to have a complaint about their former home as they appeared in the second part of their Netflix docuseries. The final three parts of the six-part series, entitled Harry & Meghan, dropped on the streaming platform on Thursday (December 15).
While the first of the three episodes saw the couple discuss how they met for the first time and the attention they faced, the second set of hour-long episodes focuses on the couple’s decision to step back as senior members of the royal family.
Speaking about their time living in Nottingham Cottage, a house in the grounds of Kensington Palace in London, Meghan and Harry claimed it was not the grand palace that everyone thought they were living in and that Oprah Winfrey, who they gave their explosive interview to last year, was shocked when she came over.
"As far as people were concerned we were living in a palace. [But] we were living in a cottage," Harry said.
"On palace grounds," the duke added before Meghan said: " Kensington Palace sounds very regal of course, it does say palace in the name. But Nottingham Cottage was small."
Harry commented: "The whole thing was really small on a slight lean with low ceilings," before he jokingly added: "Whoever lived their before must have been small." Meghan, meanwhile, revealed that her husband hit his head constantly "because he's so tall".
She adds: "It was a chapter in our lives where I don't think anyone could believe what it was actually like behind-the-scenes." Harry then reveals that chat show legend Oprah came over for tea and was stunned by where they were living. "No one would ever believe it," she reportedly told the pair.
But while Harry and Meghan joked about the former residents, the pair seemingly forgot that before they moved in it was Harry's brother Prince William and wife Catherine, now the Prince and Princess of Wales, who lived at the property with their first born, son Prince George, after his birth, before moving in October 2013 to Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace.
And fans were quick to call out the pair for their comments. @enkienkiiii said: "Imagine complaining that Nottingham cottage is small and isn’t fit for you when Prince William who is the highest member of the Royal Family lives there with his wife and Prince George for quite a lot of time."
@royalobsessed_ laughed: "Harry claims he doesn’t know who lived at Nottingham Cottage before him but they 'must have been short' because the ceilings are so low. Erm, wasn’t that where Will and Kate lived?! Ah yes, super short W&C." @n67216515 posted: "Remember when William and Catherine lived at Nottingham Cottage with Prince George before the other people? I don't remember them complaining about how small it was.. #HarryandMeghanNetflix."
@seonhokimbajang posted: "Meghan & Harry complain about Nottingham Cottage? The very same building that once upon a time been Prince William and Princess Catherine home?? Who do they think they are???? #HarryandMeghanNetflix." @windsorwatcher added: "I can’t believe they’re going to complain about the size of a house when there are people on the streets & living in temporary accommodation & people who can’t afford to move out of their parents home & people who are paying crazy money for a place the size of Nottingham Cottage."
