Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's £11m US mansion engulfed in 'awful stench' from nearby bird refuge

An awful stench is said to have engulfed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s multi-million quid US mansion.

The property, which is based in Montecito, California, is located just a short distance from the Andree Clark Bird Refuge - which is a 42-acre saltwater marsh.

And the smell from the refuge has spilled into the homes of the Royal couple’s A-list neighbours - including Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom.

One local described the stench as ‘offal that has been rotting in the sun’.

Speaking on the smell, they told The Mirror : “It makes my stomach churn.

“I’ve seen lots of homeowners closing their windows when it wafts over.”

The smell has been result of the stagnant water from the refuge and it is likely to continue until improvement works are carried out in the autumn.

Cameron Benson, clean water manager for the City of Santa Barbara, said: “Water can become stagnant there.

“The odour issues are sporadic and sometimes they are worse in some conditions.”

Previously, it was reported that Harry and Meghan were on the hunt for a new home following a series of complaints about their current £11m property.

In August last year, it was revealed that a giant cannabis factory was based just 10 minutes from their mansion.

The legal weed firm vowed to install new “odour control systems” following a string of complaints from neighbours.

A source previously told the Mirror the pair were “not over the moon” with the home, which they bought back in June 2020.

The unnamed source said in January this year: “They are thinking of selling their house there. However, it won’t be on the market because of who they are.

“It’s only being shown to people who are confirmed with funds and are serious buyers.

“They want to stay in the neighbourhood or nearby but they aren’t over the moon about the house and the location.”
