Prince George and Princess Charlotte set to walk behind the Queen’s coffin during state funeral

Prince George and Princess Charlotte will attend the Queen’s funeral today, following a discussion with their parents Kate and William.

Nine-year-old future king George and sister Charlotte, aged seven, will walk behind Her Majesty ’s coffin during her state funeral in their first public appearance since the Queen’s death on September 8. The royal children will also join the 11am service at Westminster Abbey and the Committal Service at Windsor Castle this afternoon.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are said to have discussed the idea of attending the ceremony with their two oldest children, before deciding together that they would go to the funeral to say goodbye to their great-grandmother - who George affectionately called ‘Gan Gan’. Four-year-old Prince Louis will stay at home while the rest of the family attends the service, The Mirror reports .

Today will mark the first time that the children will use their new titles in public, Prince George of Wales and Princess Charlotte of Wales. George and Charlotte will walk in procession with other members of the Royal Family behind the Queen’s coffin as it is carried by the military bearer party.

The young royals will walk together side-by-side behind their parents, followed by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle . King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla will be immediately behind the coffin, followed by Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, then Prince Andrew, followed by Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex, and then the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The Queen’s coffin will be moved from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey just after 10:30am, before the funeral service begins at 11am. Her Majesty will then make her final journey to Windsor for the second service at St George’s Chapel.

The funeral will end with a private service for members of the Royal Family this evening. Mourners can follow the full Order of Service for the day here .
