Prince Charles holds first engagement after second bout of Covid

The Prince of Wales was seen for the first time since catching Covid on Thursday.

Prince Charles presented The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes to 21 universities and institutions at St James’s Palace.

Charles, 73, who has said he is prepared to be quizzed by cops investigating The Prince’s Foundation over cash for honours allegations, was freed from his Covid-19 isolation on Tuesday.

Princess Anne, 71, filled in at the prizegiving for the Duchess of Cornwall, 74, who remains in isolation after she tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday.

A source close to the Prince of Wales, said: “He has bounced back well after his second bout.”

The ceremony was held to celebrate 21 universities and colleges for their innovation and excellence that benefit the wider society.

London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger picked up a prize for Glasgow University for its work combating Hepatitis C and dengue fever.

Dame Katherine, Chancellor of Glasgow University, said: “We are immensely proud as there has been a vast amount of work being done over the past two years in a challenging period of time.

“It’s a long time since I have seen this many smiles.

“After seeing the work being done to tackle Covid-19 it is incredible to see the Prince of Wales back out working so soon after his second bout.

“The Prince and Princess Royal had quality conversations about the work that was being done.”

Co-creator of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine Dame Sarah Gilbert picked up a prize on behalf of Oxford University.

She had, earlier this week, been handed her Damehood at Windsor Castle, also by Princess Anne.

Dame Sarah, Professor of Vaccinology at the University of Oxford, said: “It’s been quite a week. But this is recognition for the infrastructure that has been in place for years which enabled us to create a vaccine. It wasn’t high profile back then but we realise how important it was now. It is to celebrate the success of the university as a whole.”
