Prince Andrew's push for Beatrice and Eugenie's roles - row with Charles and royal cash

Prince Andrew is said to be lobbying the Queen for a return to public life and to have his HRH style reinstated.

But Andrew is reportedly not just pushing for himself - he's also thought to want his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie to have bigger royal roles.

The sisters rarely carry out royal engagements despite having HRH titles and both have high-flying jobs.

Beatrice works for a software company and Eugenie the director of an art gallery, while their husbands Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank are also successful in their fields.

However, the reported desire by the father for them to become working royals and have the perks that come with it is said to have caused rows within the Firm in the past...

Princess titles

Both Beatrice and Eugenie have princess titles and are styled HRH - and have been since birth.

As grandchildren of the monarch, they are allowed to use these titles and styles.

However, when the sisters were still young children, there was a “cruel” plan to strip them of their Her Royal Highness (HRH) styles, according to royal historian Marlene Koenig.

She told Express.co.uk : “There was a discussion that the York princesses would lose their royal style and become styled as children of a Duke and that got vetoed.

I suspect because they were already born and it would have been seen as cruel.

“But it was already decided then that they were not going to be working royals and I think that was a big mistake.”

As heir to the throne, Charles has spent his entire life preparing for the day he takes to the throne to become King.

And it’s long been reported that he plans for a slimmed-down monarchy with a team of seven senior royals - that doesn’t include Prince Andrew or his daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

This came to a head in 2011, when Beatrice and Eugenie were stripped of their 24-hour taxpayer-funded security.

And one royal expert said Charles was forced to intervene in the debate about funding for Beatrice and Eugenie's security after it caused a row behind palace walls.

It is thought the heir to the throne stepped in after the younger of his nieces racked up huge security costs as she travelled the world on her gap year.

A report published at the time suggested Eugenie spent more than £100,000 of taxpayers' money as she explored India, America, Thailand and South Africa.

Charles reportedly stepped in to control the spending, with royal author Angela Levin telling the programme Beatrice and Eugenie: Pampered Princesses? he suggested the sisters didn't need costly security as it's unlikely they will ever become working royals.

But Charles's suggestion didn't go down well and is said to have left Andrew furious.

Balcony snub

Meanwhile, another incident that affected Andrew and his daughters also reportedly left him angry.

It came in 2012 when the Queen was celebrating her Diamond Jubilee and an appearance by the royals on the Buckingham Palace balcony was planned.

It was reported that Charles had a hand in the decision for only senior royals, such as the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, to appear on the balcony - leaving Andrew dismayed.

Royal expert Richard Kay wrote in the Daily Mail in 2012: "For Andrew, according to one close figure, being excluded from the balcony scene was a sudden and totally unexpected demotion from front-rank to peripheral royal. It was ‘like a dagger to his heart and he hasn’t got over it’.

"But this was a dramatic statement of intent by Charles, who long ago decided that when he is king the Royal Family would be ‘slimmed down’.

"But as a friend of the Duke of York says: ‘The speed and suddenness with which Charles has acted has taken Andrew’s breath away. It’s dreadfully high-handed.’"
