Prince Andrew allowed to wear formal robes for King's Coronation as Prince Harry dons suit

Prince Andrew attended King Charles' Coronation wearing a ceremonial robe, despite no longer being a working member of the royal family - but nephew Prince Harry wore a suit for the occasion.

The Duke of York was seen arriving at Westminster Abbey for his brother's crowning wearing his formal Order of the Garter robes. Andrew was previously banned by the late Queen from wearing the robes in public for her last Garter Day at Windsor Castle, The Mirror reports.

On his way to the Abbey, the disgraced prince was driven down The Mall in a state car and parts of the crowd in a grandstand in front of Buckingham Palace booed as he went past. Buckingham Palace confirmed earlier that Andrew would play no formal role in the Coronation ceremony with the release of the order of service, with name nor his title receiving no mention in the lengthy programme.

Prince Andrew will be absent from the procession behind the Gold State Coach carrying the newly crowned King and Queen from Westminster Abbey back to Buckingham Palace after the ceremony. He is also not expected to feature during an appearance on the Buckingham Palace for the RAF flypast later this afternoon.

Andrew stepped down from public life after his disastrous Newsnight interview in November 2019 and the furore over his friendship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. He later paid £12million in an out-of-court settlement to his accuser Virginia Giuffre, and ahead of the settlement his late mother the Queen stripped him of all of his honorary military roles, including Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, and he gave up his HRH style.

After arriving at the Abbey, Prince Andrew took his seat in the Lantern area in the third row with the rest of the Royal Family. Prince Harry arrived at Westminster Abbey along with the Duke of York and Princess Royal, and was seen chatting to his cousins in the congregation after also taking a seat in the third row.

The Duke of Sussex announced his decision to step back as a working member of the royal family alongside his wife Meghan Markle. The Coronation is the first time that Harry has appeared in public with his relatives since the release of his explosive memoir Spare, in which he criticised members of the royal family including Charles and his brother William.

Meghan has stayed behind in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, with Archie's fourth birthday falling on the same day as the Coronation. Harry will also be absent from the procession behind the Gold State Coach carrying the newly crowned King and Queen from Westminster Abbey back to Buckingham Palace, and is expected to return to the US immediately after the Abbey ceremony.
