Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has finally announced May 3 as the date of the upcoming federal election.
“My fellow Australians, this morning, I visited the Governor-General, and Her Excellency has accepted my advice that an election be held on Saturday, 3 May, 2025,” he said during the press conference.
“Over the last few years, the world has thrown a lot at Australia. In uncertain times, we cannot decide the challenges that we will face, but we can determine how we respond.”
“Now, on the 3rd of May, you choose the way forward. Your vote has never been more important.”

Due to weeks of speculation and delays (thanks to Cyclone Alfred) Albanese had been joking with reporters that the moment they saw his car — you know, the one with the C1 number plate and the Australian flag waving about — drive down Dunrossive Drive at Government House, that’s when we’d know the federal election date call was coming.
At 7am, Albo’s car made it’s way down the drive en route to chat with the Govenor General, essentially causing the dedicated reporters in Canberra to freak the fuck out.

After a quick chat and maybe some tea, at 7:23am, Albo headed back to Parliament House where he is due to hold a press conference and announce the date in the next hour.
Albo’s announcement comes after the Cyclone Alfred pushed back the date of the election call and the federal budget became the biggest talking point of the nation.
What date will the election be held?
The federal election will take place on May 3, 2025.
Now that we know the date, Albanese and the leader of the Liberal Party, Peter Dutton, will launch into a five-week campaign to win over voters.
So far, it seems to be a pretty tight race with Labor only three seats away from losing the majority, while the Coalition needs 19 seats to form government. If this happens, it’ll be the first one-term government in almost a century.
More to come.
