A Sefton care home could soon be turned into a residential school after plans were submitted last week.
The plans, to transform the former Shieling Care Home on Southport Road in Lydiate into a school, have been submitted to Sefton Council by West Kirby School and College.
West Kirby School and College run a residential school for children with special educational needs in Wirral, which has been repeatedly judged as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and according to its website takes in children referred from over 20 local authorities across the UK.

The application in Lydiate is for a change of use under permitted development rights, which means the school is hoping to avoid having to apply for full planning permission to carry out its transformation of the former 28-bed purpose-built care home.
The Shieling Care Home was rated inadequate at its last inspection, carried out earlier this year and the service was listed as ‘archived’ by the Care Quality Commission in September.
According to documents submitted as part of the application by West Kirby School and College, the former home was on the market for a guide price of £850,000 in August and sits within nearly an acre of land on the edge of the greenbelt in Lydiate.
Having now had an offer accepted on the property, West Kirby School and College state its aim is to transform the building into a primary school to accommodate young people with special educational needs., which would be state funded.
The application is currently open for comments, after which Sefton Council planning officers will consider the progress of the proposals.
