Primary school in Bilborough praised by Ofsted for its ‘ambitious’ curriculum

A primary school in Bilborough has been graded Good by Ofsted. Staff, pupils, parents and carers at the Brocklewood Primary School are celebrating the rating after its recent inspection in March 2023, its first inspection since September 2017.

The report describes the school's staff as being a “strong team” and states that children “feel safe and happy in school”. The inspectors also praised the "ambitious" curriculum at the school and the range of extracurricular activities that develop a wide range of skillsets and interests.

It was also stated in the report that "pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) achieve well. Teachers adapt activities, so that pupils with SEND learn the same content as their classmates."

The report went on to say: "The curriculum for pupils’ personal development is strong. Pupils learn about the importance of diversity and equality.

"They have a good knowledge of faiths and cultures that are different to their own. Pupils are being well prepared for life in modern Britain."

Brocklewood’s Headteacher Heather Tarrant said: “I am delighted that our school, our children and our incredible staff have been recognised in such a positive light in our latest Ofsted report. Our collaborative approach and commitment as a team has created a caring, calm environment that our parents, carers and community can be proud of.

"The Brocklewood community deserves the very best from its school and we are ambitious in our approach and in our plans for the future. I feel privileged to work with such a dedicated, strong staff team."

She continued: "They are the catalyst for this journey of improvement, and it would not have been possible without them. These are the people that make the biggest difference to our children and their education.

"As well as our commitment to improving our care and education provision we have also made extensive improvements to our environment which have started with a brand-new roof. We’re looking forward to welcoming all of our new families in the area and assure them of a very warm welcome.”

Transform Trust, which the school is part of, CEO Rebecca Meredith added: "Heather and her team are committed to the children and their community; I am sure they will continue to strive for excellence in all that they do.

"Ofsted has rightly recognised Brocklewood’s efforts and improvement to date as well as the dedicated staff team that nurture the school’s inclusive, high-quality provision. The Transform Trust family of schools strive to make every day the very best for all our children.”

Regarding what the school needs to do to improve, inspectors stated: "Some pupils who are still at the early stages of learning to read do not receive effective support. This prevents them from becoming confident and fluent readers.

"Leaders should ensure that these pupils receive effective help, so that they can decode unfamiliar words and become fluent readers."

They continued: "In mathematics, teachers do not always choose appropriate ‘challenge’ activities. Pupils do not apply what they have learned well enough.

"Leaders should ensure that teachers provide these pupils with activities that will deepen and enrich their mathematical thinking."
